Well Control Barriers.
One of the worst accidents that could happen to a rig is a blowout.
A blowout is a situation when there is uncontrolled flow of fluid from the well.
Before a blowout, there is always a kick which is an influx of formation fluid into the wellbore. If left unchecked, could eventually lead to a blowout.
There are two most important well control barriers:
1)Primary Well Control-Hydrostatic Column of the drilling fluid.
2)Secondary Well Control-BOP (Blowout Preventer)
A blowout can only occur when the rig has lost all controls of secondary well control.
Which is why the well control awareness is important to every person onboard.
There are two main organizations providing well control certificate namely
-IADC (International Association of Drilling Contractors)
-IWCF (International Well Control Forum)
