Should we convert to Renewable Energy?

Image
Should we convert to Renewable Energy? မြန်မာ version below Over the past years, there has been a lot of efforts to convert our main energy source to renewable energy, instead of fossil fuel and nuclear. A lot of solar farms and huge wind farms have been appearing around the world. Major Oil & Gas companies has been pushing their image towards that as well. So, lets us discuss some of the drawbacks about Renewable Energy. -Getting the free energy from wind and sun is a great idea. Except for the fact that those are very dilute energy sources since they are "Natural". Have you ever come across a photo of solar farm while browsing? -They are huge, like a lot. What most of the people are not seeing is the amount of trees and wildlife needs to be clear from that area is enormous. -If you compare the energy output of a nuclear reactor to a solar farm (Ivanpah, California), you need 450 times 3500 acres to cope up with the energy output of the nuclear reactor. Do you know Ger...

What is a Well Control Certificate?

Image
Well Control Awareness is important to every personnel onboard. (မြန်မာVersion below) If you are planning to work on a rig, you might be asked to present your well control certificate. Having a well control certificate is also one of the important steps to become a driller, derrickman, drilling engineer, or a drilling supervisor. A well control certificate shows the competency of a personnel in regards of well control procedures such as -Shut in procedures. -Circulation. -Flow check. -Operation of a BOP. -Well Killing Method. -Pressure ratings of the well control equipment & line ups etc. There are 4 levels in well control certificates. 1) Awareness 2) Introductory 3) Driller 4) Supervisor In order for you to pass the exam and acquire the certificate, one must be able to score 75% and above. There are two major organizations which mainly provides the certificates. -IADC (International Association of Drilling Contractors) Widely accepted in USA and the gulf of Mexico. However...

Well Control Barriers.

One of the worst accidents that could happen to a rig is a blowout. A blowout is a situation when there is uncontrolled flow of fluid from the well. Before a blowout, there is always a kick which is an influx of formation fluid into the wellbore. If left unchecked, could eventually lead to a blowout. There are two most important well control barriers: 1)Primary Well Control-Hydrostatic Column of the drilling fluid. 2)Secondary Well Control-BOP (Blowout Preventer) A blowout can only occur when the rig has lost all controls of secondary well control. Which is why the well control awareness is important to every person onboard. There are two main organizations providing well control certificate namely -IADC (International Association of Drilling Contractors) -IWCF (International Well Control Forum) #energyarchive #drillingengineering #wellcontrol #IADC #IWCF #knowledgesharing #oilandgasindustry

What are the duties of a drilling engineer?

Image
What are the duties of a drilling engineer?   What are the duties of a drilling engineer? Generally, most people assume that drilling engineers are there just to drill. Well, it is not. There are actually people who handle that literally. The role of drilling engineers can be both office-based, and site-based (sometimes referred to as well construction engineers). Before the operation, a drilling engineer and the wells department (drilling department) is responsible for well planning/well prognosis in collaboration with other departments such as supply change and management, exploration and reservoir engineering. Planning of the long lead items which usually take time to fabricate is also one of the crucial duties. In the later topics, we will go further into well planning and field development planning. During the operation, a typical drilling engineer’s duty is to have a daily conference call with the rig (usually it happens in the early morning) followed by another meetin...

Difference between Semi Tender and Tender Assisted Rigs

Image
This time we will be talking about tender and semi tender rigs. They are one of the most commonly used rig types in offshore, especially in offshore. Semi tender and tender rigs are usually stationed beside the platform. For example (West Vencedor from Seadrill in Yetagun Campaign, Myanmar) So what are the advantages of semi/tender rigs? 1) Self-raise capability. Can remove its own drilling package and then rig-up on the same package on another platform. 2)Large deck space to store the drilling equipment. 3)Could be fabricated in many yards. 4)Can be utilized as a construction barge depending on the conditions. 5)Can be used where the platform is out of reach from jackup's cantilevers. So what are the disadvantages: 1)Cannot operate in deep water conditions. 2)Cannot withstand rough weather conditions. 3)Weight sensitive. The difference between semi tender and tender rig is the hull design. Since semi tender is a semi submersible, it can operate in deeper water, can withstand to ...
