Generally, most people assume that drilling engineers are there just to drill. Well, it is not. There are actually people who handle that literally.

The role of drilling engineers can be both office-based, and site-based (sometimes referred to as well construction engineers).

Before the operation, a drilling engineer and the wells department (drilling department) is responsible for well planning/well prognosis in collaboration with other departments such as supply change and management, exploration and reservoir engineering.

Planning of the long lead items which usually take time to fabricate is also one of the crucial duties. In the later topics, we will go further into well planning and field development planning.

During the operation, a typical drilling engineer’s duty is to have a daily conference call with the rig (usually it happens in the early morning) followed by another meeting with the contractors. So drilling engineers usually do not get the privilege of 9-6. Depending on the situation they can get a 1 am ph call.**(Shout out to the rig personnels who grind 12 hrs shifts)**

There are two basic reports for a drilling engineer to pay attention.

1) Daily Drilling Report (DDR)

2) Daily Cost Report (DCR)

Your typical daily drilling report consists of the operation activities of previous 24 hours, HSE highlights, vessels & crew change activities and weather reports. Well, DCR, it is obviously a cost report ranging from different services and vessel costs to daily rig costs.

And there is a section in every drilling department, that is to monitor the operation, in real-time. Also from time to time, a drilling engineer may be assigned to visit the rig to organize and coordinate the activities onboard.

Operation အတွက် လိုအပ်တဲ့ပစ္စည်းတွေ အထူးသဖြင့် Long leads items တွေပေါ့။ နောက်ပိုင်းကျရင်တော့ well planning နဲ့ field development အကြောင်းကိုရှင်းပြသွားပါမယ်နော်။

Operation စပြီဆိုရင်တော့ drilling engineer တစ်ယောက်အနေနဲ့ နေ့စဥ်မနက်တိုင်း ရေနံစင်နဲ့ conference call ခေါ်ပြီး အစည်းအဝေးလုပ်ရပါတယ်, မနက် ၇ နာရီလောက်တည်းက စရတာပေါ့။ တခါတရံ ရေနံစင်မှာ ကိစ္စတခုခုအရေးပေါ်ရှိရင် ည ၁ နာရီ ၂ နာရီလည်းဖုန်းကဝင်လာတတ်ပါတယ်။ သာမာန် corporate ဝန်ထမ်းတွေလို မနက် ၉ ညနေ ၆ ဆိုတာမျိုးရတာ ရှားပါတယ်

ကဲ rig နဲ့ meeting ပီးရင်တော့ contractors တွေနဲ့meeting ထပ်လာပါတယ်။ Daily Drilling Report (DDR)တွေ Daily Cost Report (DCR) တွေကို go through လုပ်ရပါတယ်။

၁)DDR ဆိုတာက လွန်ခဲ့တဲ့ ၂၄ နာရီအတွင်း rig ပေါ်က လုပ်ငန်းစဥ်တွေဖြစ်ပါတယ်။ အထဲမှာ HSE, operation, crew change, vessel report အစုံပါပဲ။ ကမ်းလွန်ဆိုရင်တော့ ရာသီဥတုအခြေအနေတွေ၊ dynamic positioning တွေပါ ပါဝင်ပါတယ်။

၂)DCR ကတော့ ပိုက်ဆံတွေပါပဲ။ နေ့စဥ် ကုန်ကျစာရိတ်တွေ အကုန်ပါတဲ့ဟာပေါ့။

ပြီးတော့ drilling engineer တစ်ယောက်က operation ကို real time monitor လည်းလုပ်ရပါတယ်။ ရံဖန်ရံခါ site visit လုပ်ပြီးတော့ စီစဥ်ညွှန်ကြားရတဲ့အခါလည်းရှိပါတယ်။
